The El Grande is my favourite pen to turn; because of the
size, it really shows off the wood. My question is - what other pen kit
would be recommended that also shows off the wood? As much as I like the El Grande, the center band can sometimes look cheap or "plastic like". I like using the center band, I just want something a little "richer" looking.

I like the Gentlemans and the el Presidente pens. Similar to the el Grande but with metal nub and threads. The el Presidente makes a great closed body pen.

I like the gents and statesmans and just started doing barons. Another great kit with no plastic looking parts. There's also the Sierra which has options with no black trim. I haven't made any yet, but I just bought 2 kits yesterday. To be close to the diameter of the el grande, you should look for the full size gent or statesman though.
