Very nice work and I also am a fan of the Comfort Design. If you have any Bocote left try turning it against the grain. You will get a really wild outcome from the right piece of wood. I have two in my photo album done in Bocote. Make sure and look at page 2.

As to how I made the spiral.
I turned a piece of Holly down (on the tube) to about 9mm. Then I drilled the Purpleheart, sanded the Holly to fit the inside of the Purpleheart glued it in place with some polyurethane glue.
Then proceeded turning the outside. Once I got it to the size I wanted it, I marked it with a utility knife (on the lathe) and then used a three point file to file the grooves in it.
