Oak burl

I had some downed oak wood cut and split to clean up our property.

Some of it was football-size and appear to have burl figure.

Does anyone turn oak burl? Do you have photos of the results?

I'll try and get done pics when I get home. I've turned a bit of it and it turns out very nice. I like burning my oak... Can't really do it and set the same effect with the burl. It's very hard as well. What sucks is the best piece I have turned is my carry pen... And it's all sorts of messed up. Can barely tell it's wood lol. I'm a welder and spend a lot of time rolling around on the ground so the finish has work off and soaked up dirt, metal shavings, metal dust... U name it lol. It does turn out to be a pretty handsome wood though.

I don't see any burl in that pile. I see some repairs where broken branches healed over, but no burl. I think you're going to have trouble getting blanks since it is so heavily cracked.

The top pieces may not be representative, but I hope you are wrong. No saying you are, just hoping for some nice figure. Pens made for local wood sounds cool if the wood is pretty enough.

The British turners have two terms

Burl which means there are eyes in the wood, and

Burr wbich means swirly grains and color.

Wood sellers in the US tend to be less precise and a lot of root ball is sold as burl but no eyes. There are round protrusions on the sides of trees that are all burr.

I did not see eyes, but there is potential for some burr blanks

I think there are some very nice casting pieces in that last pile , not very much of which would end up in my fireplace .
