I am a new pen turner (about 50 pens) and have just found a new tool that has really helped me to turn blanks without gouging or shattering them. It is called a versa chisel and can be found on page 70 of Penn State Industries on line catalog. The 1/2 inch is probably best for pen turning. Before using this tool I would ruin as many as I would complete.
Just thought this might help other newbies.
Now that I can actually get the blanks turned maybe now I'm ready to tackle that CA BLO finish that I've been reading about.

I would say use whatever works for you. They look like round nose scrapers ground with a steep relief. Scrapers can be useful and are about the easiest tool to use. Don't give up on those gouges. When you move onto other turnings you'll appreciate them. One day you'll discover the skew and will learn how to use it and it may become your favorite tool. Keep at it and have fun.
