I am thinking about getting to penturning. A couple questions. Has anyone used a emco unimat mini metal lathe for wood? It has a large range of speeds, but I am not sure if it has enough power. I guess I will need to chuckup a piece of oak and try using a reground tool.

No metal lathe experience here either. But, welcome to the best addiction a person could have, pen turning. The more you turn, the more you will want to turn.

I have a 7x12 mini metal lathe that I bought from Homier, this woudl be the same 7x12 that Harbor Freight sells.
It works great for turning pens. adn you can get accesories specifically for and turning with it. not sure how this compaires with the lathe you are looking at. I would imagine that anything capable of turning metal would have the power to turn wood. the 7x12 is definitly a powerful little lathe
