I have been turning a few aluminum bodied pens lately and didn't like the extra wear on my tools. I found an old HSS heavy steel cutter (Steel lathe) that my Dad gave me a while back. Using a grinder, I made the HSS tip into a round nosed scraper and put about a 60 degree small bevel on the tip.

The final sharpening was done on the Tormek.

I Tig welded a 1/2" threaded rod to one end of it. Here is a side view.

Finally, I turned a handle out of Bolivian Rosewood and tapped it to thread onto the rod of the tool.

I guess now I can get back to making pens!

Cheers,

Thanks tipusnr... [:)] I used the new tool today. It works much better than my Crown HSS scraper. It holds the edge much better.

You are exactly right. That was the first thing I noticed. No flex, and no bounce. It is very heavy.
