I picked up two pieces this afternoon and cannot identify the wood. They came from an area covered with Elm & Black Walnut. The cut pieces show one with splating & one without. The grain is pretty "stringy" and a bear to split. I only came across a couple of small sap pockets in the piece I've already cut.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bob

I first said it looked like walnut but I did not enlarge the photo. After looking at a closeup I have to agree that it looks like it came from a mature apple tree. Does it have any white sapwood?

Apple or another fruit wood type.

It looks close to what I used to cut from the family apple orchard. Bark looks similar to. Tight grain like cherry but more brown

The white blotchness is another give away. I think it has to do with the stresses of the wood. I have logs that I have had sawn that had white swirling around the crotches. Very impressive coloring.

btw this wood stinks when wet. At least to me it does. After sawing hundreds of these trees down I can't stand the smell.
