Mystery Wood!

Hey everyone,


I have a piece of wood that I am going to use for a pen. Unfortunately, I do not know what wood it is exactly. Can you help me out? Here a some pics. I'm almost certain it is not cocobolo or bocote, but...:biggrin:


And no, the end grain is not blue like in the pic!:biggrin: It is a brownish-black.

After looking it up, I am almost certain it is kingwood. Anyone want to affirm my interpretation. This is where I got. They look about the same.

Might help to see one of either the top or bottom sides in relation to the one side you showed. My guess would be Wenge, but seeing one of the other sides (not the opposite) would clear that up at least...

(edit, that would have been my other guess JB..)

Kingwood that I have seen is not generally that open...

That's as "wenge" as it gets.

It does look a little bit more like the wenge. If anyone else has any other opinions, please feel free to comment.

Is there any problems I should look out for when doing a CA finish? Will it adhere properly? Thanks.

wenge for sure... no trouble with the finish but can be a little brittle and is fairly porous.

Only problem is the needle-like slivers you can get from the edges before you get it turned. :beat-up:

I was gonna guess 'ply' but I guess it's wenge

looks like wenge to me great wood for slivers

It's also a great wood for bleaching if you want to try something a little different.
