Anybody have any idea what wood this is. I have quite a bit of it in the form of hardwood flooring scrap.

Looks kinna like jarrah or jatoba. is it heavy for its size?

You know what? It probably is jatoba(brazillian cherry).
Lotts of floors are jatoba.

Jatoba is Brazilian Cherry and Jarrah is a species of eucalyptus often called Swan River Mahagony.

BonsaiBill,

That looks EXACTLY like some Japanese wood that I have had. I still have a piece or two somewhere. For the color that it shows on my screen and the sharp grain also, it looks very similar to what I have had. Unfortunately, I have forgotten the name. I can find that to at a specialty wood store, if my wood turns out to look exactly like that.

I think the whole clue here is that it is hardwood flooring. Most exotic hardwood flooring is usually Ipe or Brazilian Cherry. If you are real rich you can go with other exotics such as Bubinga or even Cocobolo, but most of us poor pen turners (who spend way too much on their turning toys) can only afford the stardard woods.
