So i fired up my lathe first thing today when it arrived and turned my first pen.

The first two were just to get a feel. The third, well that was fun. It was a wormy persimmon. The first two i finished with Friction polish and the third I did with a friction polish and CA (just 2 coats).

Let me know what you guys think. Tell me what I can do to make them better. (i am a bit proud of how the persimmon turned out though)

You've got an imagination for form...that's a good thing..my fav is the second..like the fit and finish. As far as the ca goes, I'd say put a couple more coats on and use micro mesh to smooth and gloss them up. BTW..they beat the snot outa my first efforts by far..keep up the good work and you'll be amazed how fast you grow into this..uh..er..hobby(aka addiction)

I've noticed a lot of the pens that have a CA finish have lines around the pens. They look like they could use more very fine sanding to get them smooth. I don't use CA because it makes me ill, and it looks like a lot of work to get a perfect finish, which I demand of myself.
I use multiple coats of Shellawax liquid and presently 3 or 4 coats of Deft spray lacquer. I really like the last few I did with the lacquer. It is a very easy finish, as long as you do all the sanding correctly, and I think the lacquer may last longer. YMMV.
Tim.
