My first pen was made from a slim line kit I bought from a local Rockler distributor that was clearing out their pen making area. I bought all their stock for 40 cents on the dollar.
The wood I got from my Dad. He used to work with a guy that owned 100 acres of virgin hardwood forest and would pay my Dad for his help in wood. One of the hardwoods he used to get was American Elm. The thing about this elm was that it was untouched by the blight of Dutch Elm disease that killed off, basically, all native American Elm.
my Dad has since passed away and I have made dozens and dozens of pens, and although I absolutely despise Cross pens due to their skinny form factor, I still find this pen to be my favorite and use it every day.
