My sister is doing her officer's course soon, in the navy. I want to send her a pen for graduation. Does anyone know the correct form it should be? I imagine something like:

LTJG. XXX XXXX, USN

I understand that one first becomes a LTJG, and then a LT.? Right now she is an Ensign.

Is this correct?

Which navy? The Royal Navy or the US Navy? Upon her graduation, what will her rank be? Some come out JG's, some come out full LT's. Find that out.

As a former military man, I think it's safe to say that the labeling of her current rank at the time of presentation is perfectly acceptable. Yes, she'll (likely) get promoted, but it'll be a great reminder of "days past".

Once selected for advancement, your sister will advance from Ensign to Lieutenant (Junior Grade) or LTJG. Proper form is Name, LTJG, USN or USNR as appropriate.

I agree with Brad and John. Put the proper rank at graduation on the pen in the proper form. It will be something she will cherish even when she becomes an Admiral.
