Anyone out there try using the replacement rods for mandrels in a jacob's chuck? Just seems like it might be a way to save a few bucks.

That is exactly how I turned my first pens on my Shopsmith. Works great when you have the proper live center in the tailstock! Of course, you really are not saving any money unless you already have the chuck. [
