Hello,

While trying to repair a blown out blank Saturday, I managed to glue a couple of bushings onto my pen mandrel. I had been thinking about a new one anyway, but I thought I would post a couple of questions here first:
1. Will acetone release CA glue?
2. Is the type of mandrel that screws on to the headstock any better than the morse taper type?

Thanks,
Dan Heine

1 - Yes, acetone will dissolve CA

2- Since I got my Beall Collett IMHO it is better than any of the morse taper styles.

Frank,

I'm talking about one of these in the picture shown at the top of this page:

Dan,
I use an adjustable mandrel from PSI. It mounts with a morse taper and uses a collet to lock down on the mandrel shaft. Adjust the length to just long enough to hold the blank(s). That way you have less chance of whipping and bending. In this case, the shorter the mandrel the less problems you are likely to encounter. Just my 2 cents worth.

Interesting. Don't believe I have ever seen that type before. Provided they are precision made they should be very fine. But a pro adjustable mandrel holder or a collet type will do you fine also.

Heat will also soften up CA enough to release it. As recall, about 250° will do it. Set the thing on your stove burner for a few minutes or gentle application of a propane torch will work just fine.
