I now possess a huge chunk-a-trunk of magnolia from my father-in-law's backyard. Has anyone turned magnolia and is it a good prospect for pens, stoppers, bowls etc?
Thanks
Trevor

I have turned a bit of Magnolia and have quite a bit set up in my barn. It is a very light yellow to whitish wood with redish brown lines at the growth rings. The rings are nice and wavy, so I suppose it would be kinda nice for stoppers and pens.

I really like it for bowls and hollowforms. I've turned a couple from it as well as traded with others. Turn it green for the bowls.

Give it a shot, its free wood. Make a $1.70 slimline and you won't be out much.

I also accumulated a fair amount of Magnolia coutesy of Ivan. I have cut up some and dried in the m-wave but haven't turned it yet. I have seen some other stuff turned from magnolia in our local club and it turns beautifully. Not much figure in what I have seen but is a nice white-creamy color and consistant. I have been told that it is very eady to work, not as white as holly but looks similar.
