I was sawing some blanks today and found this piece of wood.
It's cedar and they are cut into 3/4 squares.
I had to get a magnifying glass to count the rings in each blank.
At 40 rings I got lost---twice.
The 8 sticks are 11--3/4 inches long.
This is all from the same piece of wood.
It's just hard to believe there is this much grain.

I have an idea. If you were to take in your top photo, on the bottom row, the middle blank with the grain running the same way. Now take that blank and rip it into quarters and glue it back together with the grain running the opposit way as the piece next to it. If you can't understand what I'm trying to say here's another way to look at it. Picture the end of the blank, quartered, the upper left quarter the grain would go up the quarter next to it to the right the grain would run to the right, the quarter below that the grain would run down and the last quarter on the bottom left the grain would run left.. I hope that makes sense. Anyway what I'm picturing is that you would have grain lines running end to end all the way around the blank.
