Looking for some Deng wood from Laos. Anyone ever hear of it. Looks like a cross of afzelia burl and leapard wood. Comes from laos and the general area.Species name Xylia Xylocarpa, other common names Pyinkado, Pyin or Deng. Does anyone have that for sale?
Thanks:D

Deng! That is some beautiful wood. I wonder if that is a very nice example of afzelia xylay. Xylocarpa is the specie name for afzelia, and xylay figure looks like what is pictured.

I don't think they are the same. That sample came from friends of mine that are from laos and they say it's two different trees. Look alike but different they say the lumber from the afzelia tree is straight grained and from the Deng tree is the same pattern thru out the trunk as in the photo. They also say the parts of the Deng tree are editable, young leaves and seeds.

Wikipedia list 7 different species of Afzelia, one of which is Afzelia Xylocarpa.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afzelia

All of the Afzelia species are in the Fabaceae falmily, which also includes all of the Mesquites, Acacias, Carobs, and Tamarinds, all of which produce edible seeds. Also included in the Fabaceae family are peas, peanuts, beans, and lentils.

What you have is more than likely an exceptional piece of what turners normally refer to as XY Afzelia, XYlay Afzelia, or Snakeskin Afzelia. You will probably have a hard time finding a piece with the intense figure you've shown above but there are sources available:

(No photo but listed as item 206-9308 Afzilia Lay)

Below is a pen I found in the SOYP forum that appears to be from XY Afzelia:

The problem with common names is that they are often local and the same name can be applied to more than one species. Just look at all the names for what we normally call Osage Orange. Lacewood and Leopardwood are often interchanged and there are a couple of woods that go by the name of Snakewood that look nothing at all like the stuff we see here that's prone to cracking. There is a wood from Africa called Afzelia that doesn't appear to be related to the Afzelia from SE Asia that we use for pens. I did a search on Xylay Xylocarpa and could find nothing. I think the peice you have has been mislabeled and that it is actually an exhibition grade piece of Afzelia Xylay.
