Inlay beginner question

I am thinking about trying to do some inlay. I am kind of intimidated by what I have seen others doing by their end results.

I did a search for inlay and didn't find much for the starter.

can anyone point in a direction where I might be able to find a starters guide on how to do inlay on a pen?
I have noticed that there seems to be a couple different ways, powder and actual wood inlays. does this sound right?
too many qustions. not enough time or space.
