If you had to choose

Would you rather get a regular scroll chuck? Or a collet chuck?

Both are similar in price, and will be the last piece I need to drill on the lathe.

I forgot to add that I'm leaning towards the scroll chuck so that I can do bowls and other such things.

Scroll chuck, If I HAD to choose. Collet chuck requires the blank to be round, and, although I really like my collet chuck, the extra step to make the blank round is just an extra step.

Well, I use my collet chuck all the time and rarely use my scroll chuck, so I vote for collet.

I use my scroll chuck five times more than my collet.

But, I make a LOT of wood jigs that fit the scroll chuck, so it gets use for that purpose.

You name it!
Wanna make peppermills, make a 1 and 1/16 peg to drive it, that way you are not using an "inside grip" which will loosen, if a tool catches.
Wanna make face pieces for desk mags? Make a corian flat surface, rounded to the proper diameter (just under 3 inches), glue that to a piece of scrap poplar 2 x 2, use two sided tape.
Wanna make Bottlestoppers? Take a 2 x 2 poplar piece, turn to correct outside diameter for bottlestopper (just over an inch), then turn the end to 5/16" and mount your blanks on the 5/16 peg.

Lots of others, my ceiling (between rafters in basement) has about 20 nails with jigs on them.

Remember these are waste poplar. I make them and throw them away when they break, make a new one (sometimes up to TEN minutes). Amazing the things you can think of, if you allow yourself.

Need precision up to 3/4 inch -- Collet (ER 32 size) Collet Chuck

Need less precision (more runout) and more flexibility -- Scroll chuck and additional jaws.

Hey Ed, I would love to see some pics of your jigs. But only if you have time and don't mind. I don't use my scroll chuck very much but only because I didn't know you could do stuff like that for it.

A scroll chuck is good for general turning , things like bowls and boxes and will work well for drilling on the lathe . I would still round the blanks before drilling on the lathe though .
A collet chuck will allow you to drill a precisely centered hole on a round blank . This can be very handy if you are drilling a large hole into a thinner blank .

Hi Justin; I don't know of any rule that says you can't possess both. All in good time, though!

Get the scroll chuck first, Oneway to be sure!
Then the Beall Collet Chuck.

You'll be a happy camper (turner!)
