Hi All. I'm new to turning but ive ordered my first Lathe. my son ande I are going into this adventure on a first time deal. we Ordered a SEG #BenchA 156 through sears. the main question I have here is what taper do I need? 1 0r 2, what are the differences? Ive seen some lathes run a different number so I'm curious if anyone knows the correct direction to point me. we will up[grade in time I just want to see how much effort we are going to put into this. id love to own a jet but right know this is more feasible. Thanks Dan

Morris Taper

Here's a link to a pic of the two different morris tapers that came with my spindle (sorry, the image tag doesn't like my google url):

https://goo.gl/photos/FSwnYf32LYCGqF2X8

The one on the bottom (taper #1) has a maximum diameter (the thickest part of the taper) of 12.3 mm. The one on the top (Taper #2) has a maximum diameter of 18mm.

If you measure the taper hole, you should have an idea of which to use.

Hope that helps!

Here is a link to the company.

Wood Lathe Machine Make your own craftsmanship - SurvivaleEquipmentGear.com

It does appear to be an MT1 in both the head and tail stock. It is not optimal, but you can get mandrels and tools for it from most of the suppliers.

Happy turning.

That looks identical to the one I bought through Harbor Freight and it is in fact a #1MT...I just hope he didn't pay that much for it.

I have exactly the same lathe from Harbor Freight, paid around $100 with coupon, but there is a small problem.

The pic maybe wrong. The price is closer to HF's larger lathe and the description doesn't match the smaller lathe.

Compare descriptions, its a tad confusing.

The "manufacturer's" site has the right pic and description.

The description for the Sears is for the larger HF I reference below.
