How to "face" a blank with sandpaper

This week I have had several inquiries about "facing" blanks. My instruction sheets refer to an "alternative" to pen mills, but there are no specifics, so I thought I would make this video to explain "Facing on the lathe with sandpaper".

Just one note, this is done after the pen is mostly turned, so that there is less material to remove, since sandpaper does not act quickly, just efficiently!!:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

I do the same but I use a Ball Mark Repair mandrel with adhesive backed sandpaper mounted in a collet chuck. William Wood-Write Ltd.

I do something similar with a converted old pen mandrel. I adhere PSA sandpaper to the thumb nut and slide the barrel along the mandrel shaft with an appropriate size bushing.
