Dose home stabilization with poly do anything for the finished look of a pen or is it only used to make soft woods easer to turn? That’s probably a “newbe†question. As well what do you use for poly. I was thinking about 50% fast drying poly and 50% mineral sprits.

I've only used poly for one batch, Mike, but it did nothing for the finish. I still finished in my normal manner. This has been the same for any stabilized blank I've turned whether it was home or professionally stabilized.

The purpose of stabilization is to add a substance to act as a glue between the fibers of a blank. It makes the blank more solid.
When finishing, you are applying a topcoat to provide luster and protect the wood from skin oils.
