Herring Bone segment?

I have two roung blanks that I thought about doing a herring bone segmentation on. The only way I know of to glue them up is to sand a flat spot on each disc that is cut so that I will have enough gluing area for it to hold. Anyone else have other suggestions?

I would think you'd lose a lot of diameter if you did that.
