A friend gave me a small piece of a tree limb maybe 1.75" diameter. A wood carver friend gave it to him as is was not something he wanted to carve. It is HARD as can be. I thought maybe Ironwood as guys both thought it was a domestic wood. The pen I gave him was absolutely stunning and I have this piece left.
Any ideas?

Lignum vitae ... perhaps

While it is heavy and dense, I have experienced it to turn rather easily.

I would say it is a Michigan iron wood found in our wet lands or even desert Iron wood. Lignum Vitae would be green with streaks of yellow.
No idea about Michagan iron wood but I'd say IW is close.
Looks like Sumac
Not like any I have but I suppose it could be regionally different.
I have some redbud and it looks like that and is hard and dense. And I love turning it!
Dunno about redbud
Could it be DIW? Do you have a photo of the pen from the other half?
DIW is my guess.
I gave it away before getting a photo. I'll get a picture of this one in a day or so.
I hate it when that happens.
