Help ID this wood

I got this blank a while back from Peter Hall (aggromere) in a box o' goodies he sent me. I'm not sure what it is. I sent him a PM but he wasn't sure either. To me, it looks too red to be walnut.

Here is a site that comes in pretty handy for me. It might have a few that are close enough to look like a match. But at least it can help you narrow it down to a few. If I were to guess from your pic though, I'd lean towards Cocobolo or a Brazillian Rosewood maybe.

from the grain and the color, I'd say African Padauk.

If so it should smell kinda somewhere between coffee and spices

Sand it on one edge. If the dust looks like cheetos dust it is paduk

I have some walnut that looks almost exactly like that. It is from a tree that was cut down about 30 years ago. The wood was split and stacked but never burned (thankfully). I don't know if is the age of the wood, the sun, or the air that gives it that red color, but it sure is pretty.

If the grain and smell are right, I would guess that it is walnut. If it is oily and smells different it could be rosewood or cocobolo.
