I round the blanks to 1/2 inch, cut them to 3/4 inch longer than final size, pop the blank into the Beal Collet chuck, shoot the bit marked at the correct stop depth with a shot of PAM and drill at 50 RPMs, turning off the lathe each time I run out of tail stock.
I DO check the Beal each time before applying the bit to make sure the blank is turning as true as possible.
I have found the key to drilling this long, skinny hole is to apply the absolute minimum amount of pressure to the tailstock screw.
