I recently cut down a hawthorne tree in my backyard. Before using it for firewood I was wondering if anybody has used it for pens or other small turnings. I believe it is a real hardwood. Anyone have any experience?

thanks

Matt

Matt, I collected some Hawthorne this summer, but haven't turned it yet. I've tried other ornamentals and the grain can surprise you. I'd say go for it. At the worst you can turn the wood off of the tubes if you don't like it.

Any free wood is good for turning. If you want to just check it out, put a chunk between centers and do some skew practice with it. Afterall it's just firewood [;)]

It could be good stuff to play with turning bowls - I used some hedgeapple my mechanic was using as firewood, stuff turns beautifully green or dry. What's the wood look like? Any pictures?
