I made a pen and pencil set out of some pine taken from my sister's front window. It had to be 60 years old or more. It had very tight grain. It makes a nice set, just a little on the plain side and a little soft.

I saw a little strip of pine in my scraps that actually had some birds eye figure in it. I threw a short peice in my chuck and was excited to see the results. I was a little disappointed with the tear out from the skew...but mind you am a still a skew-neophite. Once I sanded down through my tear out there was some nice figure. I'd bet that a multiple CA layer finish might make up for the lack of hardness. Only one way to find out.

Soft wood requires a very light touch when you are almost to size. I touch up my tool before the final cuts to make sure it is very sharp.
