Recently came across some nice looking plastic sheet pieces used in knife making...sold in smaller packs that the pick-guard stuff. Here's a link: http://www.texasknife.com/store/s-pages/TKS_6SpacerMaterials.htm#SPR24B

I can add this to the discussion. I've known Jim at TKS for years and have always found him to be as reliable and honest a vendor as you could hope for. I've dealt with him online, on the phone, and over the counter many times and never been disappointed. Many of the special materials and tools for knifemaking are similar or identical to penmaking tools, and his catalog is worth browsing through. Some of the synthetic materials he carries are great for pens, and his wood is absolutely top notch, although a little pricier than pen blanks, but you can get two pens out of most knife blocks.
