Need some advice on green sassafras.

My Dad cut a tree this weekend and cut me up some bowl blanks and some chunks that will later become pens. I rough-turned the bowls last night. I'd forgotten the joy of those wet ribbons of wood flying off the lathe! Geez, that was great! Now, I've wrapped the bowls in clean newsprint and wrapped all that in brown paper grocery bags to dry a while. I know that's what I'm supposed to do.

The wood for the pen blanks is another story. Currently it's woodstove sized logs: six - ten inch in diameter, about 18 inches long. Should I just put them in the shop and let them dry? Should I cut them into slabs and let that dry? In short, how does one prepare wood that will eventually become pens when the wood is just fresh from the forest?

And, is there anything special I should know about Sassafras?

Thank you for your wisdom, you Gods and Goddesses of Wood!

You should ship it to me, I'll take care of it for you [:D]

Seriously, cut to oversized blanks, sticker stack it so that there is good airflow all around the blanks. Coat the endgrain with something (wax or something like anchorseal).
Let 'em dry patiently. IF you get in a hurry look up the microwave thing.

Cheers,
Gary
