gel ink was formulated for ball points...to not dry out beacuse there is no cap and the tip is exposed. Rollerball ink is for capped pens and will dry out if left uncapped for an extended period of time. New rollerball ink will stay useable for longer periods of time. I think they are quite similar in thie writing characteristics..as far as I can tell. Others will disagree, I'm sure. gel ink is available for both the parker refill and for the rollerball pens.
