Seeing how I live in an apartment space is limited. Well Sort of. So I have picked two possibly good spots ( Helps that the Manager likes my family and me ) . Just waiting for my pornos ( woodworking catalogs ) to arrive. That and money for the rest of my tools and pen parts. One Question I have is what is a good place ( cheap too ) to get pen kits ?

Thanks
Dave

Let me get this right... you're thinking about setting up shop with hundreds of $$$ in tools OUTSIDE? Are you going to haul the lathe in and out every day?

Hey, whatever works I, as long as you're turning. You gonna run all this off an extension cord?? Where you going to store all your kits and blanks at?

Going to use a plastic tub or 10 to store wood, tools and kits in. Wife suggested that since we don't use the kitchen table that we should get rid of it and that I can place some things in dinning room.

I guess you're just planning to get a small lathe? I've got a Turncrafter Pro from PSI and that thing is actually quite heavy. I wouldn't want to move it back and forth too much. But if you're a strong guy, it may not bother you.
And to cut down on tools, you may want to look into getting the right chucks for your lathe so that you can drill blanks on the lathe and not even need the drill press. One less tool to worry about, just a thought.

I have my lathe already . Fox Shop about same size as Turncrafter . It weights about 45 lbs . Not too worried about lifting. I work in a warehouse where I lift my entire shift.

Dave,
My son turned in his living room when he lived in an apartment... he did have a small deck that he used when the weather permitted... it was private and inaccessable from the ground or other apartments, so he had some security, but more often, he'd use the living room where it was airconditioned... Austin can get pretty warm in the summer and actually a little chilly in the winter. I questioned the mess once and was informed that the purpose of shop vacs was to clean up messes..

And we had another turner either here on IAP or over on The Pen Shop that turned in a closet in the spare bedroom - except when his wife wasn't home, then he used the living room too.

On the pen kits, PSI is a good source, but there are a number of re-sellers that sell their kits for much less... Woodturningz, WoodNwhimsies, etc...

Would rather turn inside than out, but this apartment is too small to really setup inside with a 17 month old runnin about. Maybe not . have to think about it and run it by my wife.

Of course you could always build a work cabinet to put your lathe on that you WHEELED in and out of the house. 24x36inx36in tall would work fine.

Sad to say as much as I dislike Wally World they do have a folding display table that should work just fine for about $40 .

You mount the ruddy thing on a stand and put Big (wide) castors on it. Half the stuff in my shop has to be moved from time to time - usually to allow me to get oversized sticks on some other tool...like a 4X8 sheet onto my table saw.

If you like Fancy Slimline Pen Kits, I'm as good a source as any. I have 16 plating finishes, the prices are right and the service is top notch.

Just make sure it's solid and stable. You don't want it wiggling around while your trying to turn... unless you're going for that wavy pen look.

Storage

Sounds like you've got a keeper!

You can also find plastic tubs that are made to slide under beds and also tubs to stack with pull out drawers....

I put castors on a 2 drawer file cabinet, mounted my drill press on the top and move it any where I want....use the two drawers to store all of my drill bits and all of my instruction sheets for the kits...works great if you don't mind having a drill press standing in the apartment

I picked up a free tent trailer that I am converting to a mobile shop. I figure it will also work for open air shows. When its not in use, it can store everything inside

LOL...think of all the fine folks that set up hundreds of dollars worth of tools in their garage and put thousands of dollars worth of car out in the street and get their tail wet everytime they need to go someplace when it's raining. Of course I spent about $15,000 or so to get a house with a walkout basement to set my shop up in to avoid setting up in the garage.
We woodworkers are a sorry lot.

That sounds about right. That's what I used to do!

It can be done....

I wish I had photos of it but I lived in a two bedroom apt in Oregon where a large double sliding door closet was turned into a shop. In that space I had a 16 Inch Metal Lathe, a benchtop Ryobi Drill Press a delta 9 inch benchtop bandsaw and some other misc tools, jigs, rigs, storage spots, lights, etc....

I built up a heavy duty plywood "floor" that covered the closet floor inside and extended outside the closet by 2 or 3 feet to the front and 2 feet on either side. This allowed me to put things on rollers and roll them out, use them, roll them back, plus helped with wood chip control.

Lastly I had a good old fashion shop vac with several extension hoses which I sat out on the patio and trailed the hose around the corner to attach to whatever device I was working on.

This worked pretty well and even left room to add a few more things had I been so inclined.

When i got my first lathe (A jet 1236 on legs) I had no shop. I didn't even have materials for a shop yet. I drove about 12 hours alltogether, and got home with it about 45 minutes before sunset. I started hustling around, running a cord, locating handtools, the whole gambit. I stood there turning until it was too dark to see. I carried my lathe into the living room. I would carry it back and forth every day as soon as i got home from work. I would stand in teh front yard for hours and hours makin shavins!

Somewhere i have pictures of me standing i nthe yard turning. Every time i see them, it makes me laugh. My hands are nowhere near the toolrest. Amazing i didn't break something!

PS... I still have the piece i turned that very first night, My first time touching a lathe. It is unsanded, and unfinished. It was made from a green tree limb, so it is cracked. It looks alot like a chess Bishop. It is my most valued turning.
