I am turning some slim line pens for the freedom pen project. I have never turned slimlines before and was not given any instructions. Do I part off one end of one of the pieces to accept the centerband or does it just fit in betwwen the two sections?

If you are using the supplied centerband there is no need to part off any of the blank. it should fit between the two piece over the transmission. If you are adding your own centerband you usually part off some of the blank (top end) and glue on a pre dilled piece and turn in down to the size you want. Hope this helps.
