I have a customer inquiry about a better ink for his fountain pen. He says it is a "water..something" It is only used occassionally and tends to clog up. Should he convert it to a cartridge type or is there an additive he can use to prolong the life of the ink? The ink he uses came from Paradise Pen Company.

Thanks in advance,

Brian

The most trouble free ink, IMO, that you can get for a fountain pen is Pelikan Royal Blue. You can get cartriges or bottle ink in that brand. It solves ink problems in most pens that are in good working order and sometimes skip. It cleans out very easily if you want to test a pen, clean it and put it away for sale. It is a good ink to give a new fountain pen customer because of the above.

Private Reserve inks are wonderful stuff, but for a person who has never used a fountain pen before, they can be a slight problem. For an experianced fountain pen user they are quite suitable. And don't leave out Noodler's Ink

I have tried Private Reserve and some Noodlers. I don't really notice any difference between them. I know I'll draw some fire for that comment.

There are some subtle difference in inks in that some flow easier and some dry faster. Both of the PR and Noodlers were very good. I would recoomend this site for selecting your colors. The Noodlers is almost striking in how flat the colors are (non-reflective)

Waterman Florida blue is as no nonsense as it gets. Very safe, reliable, and popular, with good flow. This is the ink I use when a pen's performance might be questionable. Any fountain pen that sits unused for a while will dry up. Depending on the pen it could be less than a week to months.

I have the same thoughts as Joyce. If your client is only using his pen infrequently, he is most likely going to have problems regardless of what ink he uses. Perhaps you should direct him to a different type of pen or figure out a way to get the pen into use on a more regular basis.

The other thing to check is how well he maintains his pen. Most FP users, myself included, neglect proper cleaning regimines and mostly create their own problems.
