What bothered me about the description was he said it was a brass rod. I thought brass was non-magnetic.

I assume the brass rod is what the pen is setting on. The magnets are in the pen and the wood above it. That's what I think.

The brass rod is the part that the pen is resting on . It don't have to be magnetic , the pen is just sitting on it . The magnets are in the top of the pen and in the overhead .
