This is my first turning. My wife is very upset with me. I used a portion of her broom and she had to cancel a flying lesson. I think I am ready to try turning my first pen.
Regards, Les

Actually this is my first pen turning. Fit sand finish are a little rough but I think I'll get the hang of it. My turning tools are, perhaps, not the highest quality but maybe a little better quality than I am. I need to learn what finishes work the best for open grain wood. The finish appears a little rough, I ended up with 600 grit for the last sanding then a stain. I neglected to make note of what the blank was but it was a little soft but turned OK.

wood kinda looks like cocobolo. I made my first pen from some Elm I acquired from my father some years back. it also has some very open grain in areas. I used Eddie Castelin's Obie Shine Juice. It has darkened up very nicely and out of the 50 or so pens I have made since then, it is still my favorite.

Keep at it. You will get better and will look back on this first one with fondness.

Looks similar to my first pen I was pretty proud at the time :)

I think you're going to find that stain isn't a good finish.

I'd recommend checking out the finishing forum - check out these finishes
