I splurged on this (my other blanks are all under $5) and am ready to use it

http://www.pennstateind.com/store/WXEBN0920.html

Its buiit like a swiss roll - spiral pattern at the end

What would be a good style of pen to make from it?

I read somwhere abut putting a finish coating varnish on - what would I use?

Ebonite is typically a high end pen. I'd suggest Jr Gent or something similar.

As for finish - I'll let some of the experts suggest more.. I only turned one piece so far and I was less than successfull at a perfect finish. However, I will give you the one warning about this material. It has a smell all its own. Turn with VERY sharp tools and take your time and you want have too much of a problem, but I'd suggest a well ventilated area :bulgy-eyes: ...

Ebonite is a traditional material for high end fountain pens. It machines well and is valued for it's "feel" by vintage pen users. it is almost always sanded and polished, but left unfinished, as adding a solid finish removes that distinctive "feel" Buffing usually leaves just enough wax on the pen to seal it for sale. Ebonite over time will oxidize and dull, but this takes years, and is easily fixed by a touch up buff every few years.

Personal kit preference is for a Jr Statesman, or Jr Emperor if you can find one.
