I'm considering getting some kits in the Berea group buy, wondering how the sterling silver Churchill kits hold up over time, whether they are any more durable than the gold? Does anyone use chrome instead? Wonder why they don't offer rhodium or Platinum on those?

If you are getting the SS plating it stands up well. I have done many fountain and rollerball in it and have never had a problem. Here is what Craft Supplies say about the plating.
Sterling Silver

Many of our rollerball and fountain pen kits feature this plating. The parts receive a restaurant grade 20 micron plating to ensure the beauty lasts for many, many years.

I have made many SS Baron's, and never a problem...there is a blurb on the AS site regarding the SS plating on their pen kits....somewhat the same as the sterling silver plating on silverware....

If I'm not mistaken the sterlings all have an epoxy coating to help keep them from tarnishing.

That's a good thing but just know that the epoxy will probably scratch somewhat easily.
