I'm going to drill some large holes (33/64") in some cross cut tulip and bacote wood. I'm doing it on the lathe, tapeing the blank up, and am going to go from small to larger holes. Any other tips? Would be greatly appreciated.
Start by dousing the blanks in thin CA a night or two BEFORE you plan to turn. The CA does a pretty good job of holding the blank together---(go ahead, ask me how I know this!!!)
And if you want to be extra sure , use a few wrappings of cheesecloth as the tape , well saturated with CA . (Haven`t a clue as to how I know that!!) .
Yes, CA should to the trick on both ends. If I am drilling some nice burls I might use a ew layers of masking tape. But in my experience, tulipwood drills very very easily, and smells wonderful. Bocote you might need the CA and tape.
