hello just got a new bench top drill press and it won't drill all the was through it is a 10" bench top? is this to small to work thanks for the help spurg
Most tabletop DP's don't have enough travel on the spindle to drill through. Depending on how you hold material when you drill, the workaround is to drill as deep as you can, release your vise, raise the material up (drill bit inserted), reclamp and finish drilling.
It works much better to have a DP with about 3" of travel.
i have a 50mm reach on mine, generally need 60mm. i just lower the drill bit. only problem is you cant clean the flutes out as well as the bit remanis in the hole. and watch the heat!
Quill travel is a feature to consider when buying a new drill press. Unfortunately, this part of the learning process came after you made your investment. As suggested, drill, raise and finish drilling. Not the quickest way but it works.
