You have to drill part way through then put a block under the blank and finish drilling. Hope that makes sense.

Most tabletop DP's don't have enough travel on the spindle to drill through. Depending on how you hold material when you drill, the workaround is to drill as deep as you can, release your vise, raise the material up (drill bit inserted), reclamp and finish drilling.

It works much better to have a DP with about 3" of travel.

Quill travel is a feature to consider when buying a new drill press. Unfortunately, this part of the learning process came after you made your investment. As suggested, drill, raise and finish drilling. Not the quickest way but it works.
