DIY texturising tool?

Hi,

I'd like to add some texture detail to a pen and also to some other wood turnings, but I can't afford the Robert sorby tool.

Any ideas how I could do this?

I believe the wood on a pen barrel is too thin when turned down to size to use a texturing tool on and would likely strip off the wood. I have not used one before and would like to be proven wrong.
