Different sized tubes. Barrel is straight on the Baron and tapers on the JGII.

Are you saying that the tube is tapered on the JGII, or that the tube is even from end-to-end and the bushings make for a tapered piece of material?

There HAVE been "step tubes" used in pens, but not for the last decade or so. The tubes used in all the "kit pens" you will see talk about are the same diameter at both ends.

The material may be "turned larger" at one end, as is the case with the Gent and Jr. Gent and all its' offspring.

Similar in appearance, but that's it. As mentioned they're different sizes. Also different threads in the components. Nothing's interchangeable.

The silver one is a Navigator/Baron, the gold one is a Jr Gent:
