Could I use, say, something the thickness of a sticker or do I need to print on decal paper like the ones I used to soak in water to apply to plastic models?

sticker maybe to thick, unless you turn below the bushing and build up on the finish.
i mainly use water slide decal paper the same stuff used on plastic models.

You can find a small testors kit at hobby lobby in the model section.

I just tried some clear and some white vinyl with an adhesive back that I really like, mine was made by Papillo and I got it on Amazon. I like it better than water slide paper because it is easier to position I think. It is a little thicker but I have not had any problems getting ca over it. I needed something white so I could print a firetruck on it and get it to show up on a red blank for a kids christmas present. I just made another bolt action pen with a mule deer blank and I put a name on it with the clear and it really worked well.
Hope this helps.
