After finally getting my replacement mandrel shaft I've run into a problem. The tip of my dead center broke off in the little hole in the end of my mandrel and now it moves erratically. the tip is wedged in there pretty good. how do I get it out?

i had the same problem once. i used a tiny drill to remove the center and the rest came out with a dental pic. idealy you would mount it in a lathe chuck and use a center drill in a drill chuck mounted in the tailstock to redrill. however many of us don't have that luxury. hope this helps, bob

Are you saying you're using your dead center on the tail end of the lathe? That should be a live center. You must have had it tightened way too tight is my guess. Have you got a good vice? Sandwich your shaft between two pieces if wood right at the end of the shaft & tighten it in the vice. Take a pointed prick punch & slightly tap back/forth on that stuck tip, tapping toward the wood. Hope this helps.
