I was looking on rockler and saw an interesting pen blank. Not sure I like it. But someone else may think it is the best. It is made from made from crushed sunflower seed hulls. Maybe market towards environmentally friendly group. [}:)]

That material does produce an interesting pen. It is hard and somewhat brittle. Sharp tools and light cuts are a must to prevent blowouts. Woodturningz has them on sale right now.

They do blow out pretty easily, so some stabilizing with CA might be a good idea. They do turn with an interesting pattern though, the one I tried looked great till the top blew out on me. I want to try again though, it's just been down my list a bit.

Then instead of spitting out blanks you would be shi...nah, better not on a family forum. The moderator may get me!

I made one for a friend from North Dakota. It's not the nicest looking pen I ever made, however the idea that it was crushed sunflower seeds from North Dakota was fun for him.
