Cross refill and slimline tranny

I was reading D.Oliver's recommendation in the SE pen contest page for 2 modifications. They were cross refill and slimline tranny. I like turning the slim line pens but being new I'm not up to speed replacing components. Why are these two changed and with what.
I'm using PSI slimline kits so I can just give them away but better stuff is better stuff.

I think that what Derek meant was that you have to at least keep the cross refill and the slimline tranny. You can replace any 2 or more of the rest of the standard slimline parts except for those two items.
