Tried my first corn cob pen this weekend. Printed out a lengthy pdf on how to make them.I used some corn from the grocery store I had eatten the corn off and dried for a week plus. Drilling went fine and had it turned down to a lil bit over half way when it just chunked out and ruined the blank.I believe it was white corn. I picked up some of the red corn cobs for the birds and I ll shuck the corn off. Has anyone ever sent corn cob out to have it stabilized ? If some, where can I send it ?

thank you

Dave

hey dave,

i have turned many cob pens. what i have done was to let the cob soak in a rotten wood stabilizer from minwax for a night and let it dry for a night. i used feed corn not eating corn. you can drill out the center before soaking that way it will soak into the center. one more thing, you can't turn it down enough for a slim line pen. you need to use a kit that has a larger tube. your tools need to be sharp and take down slowly. good luck

Hi Dave,
I sent some cobs to this place about 2 years ago. They did a great job.

Dave,

Laurie gave some good advise, I use feed corn or squirrel corn and a soak in the wood hardener will make things easier. In fact if you have any more cobs left that you ate the corn off of you might want to experiment and see if a soak in wood hardener will help.

As a matter of fact, I bought some stabilized corn cobs on ebay a long while back. I sort of like the nonstabilized better ... I had an easier time dying them after they were turned.
