Commission for Father in Law

So this year my father in law is retiring and my wife has asked me to make a pen for him. He served as a Marine in Vietnam and has always said he would like something to commemorate his service and especially the 3rd Marine Division. My plan right now is to make a statesman rollerball for him using 3 decals to do the cap barrel and then a segmented bottom to simulate the blood stripe on the Marine dress blue uniform.

Attached are a couple mockups I've done, I just ordered the 3 blanks I'll need to pull this off as well as the Rhodium kit for it. Comments, suggestions?

What wood are you going to use for the barrel?

I'm using a natural buckeye burl for the top and 2 dyed burls for the bottom. Should be a lot of fun, and some new finishing challenges I haven't had to do before.
