Well, I think I may have finally figured this out.
At least I think I am much closer!
I did manage to take a chunk out of this blank so I am probably going to remake it. Two of the canes were used on the blank and the other was made today.
BTW, I discovered that the thickness of the slice determines how large it ends up on the blank. The leaf was cut from a cane about 1/4" across but ended up being over twice that wide. This will definitely get interesting from now on!:)

Thanks all.
Mike, I do make the canes. That is the most fun part now and there is always something new to try. I began with the online tutorials and varied the colors and patterns just a bit. I have made about a dozen blanks so far and many will be turned away and redone. As mediums go, this isn't real expensive so it doesn't hurt to rework them.

As Prof Higgins said of Elisa Doolittle in My Fair Lady "By George I think She's Got It".
Well done Dave, that Blank looks great.
Yes, you have to really "shave" the cane so that when added and rolled, it doesn't take over the Blank.
look forward to further postings.
Congratulations.
