I'm not in Canada, but one possible source might be a hobby that has an extensive model railroading department. The stuff is commonly used to blacken the unrealistic-looking brass track rails.

I use black spray laquer, let it dry overnite and it works fine. You could also go to someone like Canadian Tire and get some gun blueing solution. That's what I used in the engraving business for blacking the writing.
